The higher ups answered by sending a kill squad, then asking another janitor to clean up the mess caused by the incident. In it, the janitors finally have enough of the poor working conditions, unionized, and now demand more pay and safety regulations. The “Uprinsing” level is another good example, working as a satire on the entire game. However, even those trusty machines are sometimes faulty and instead reward clicking them with body parts that cause even more of a mess. You have dispensers in every level that provide boxes, to make carrying the various items easier, and buckets, to clean up the mess since your mop gets dirty fast. It is very clear that the game is not meant to be taken serious, and it often peppers in some morbid humor to show that. On top of that, the game has a number of easter eggs spread throughout the various levels: Whether you take a shovel to get rid of a not-so-solid rock formation in order to enter a “Minecraft”-section, find an “Alien” Facehugger in a vent, or a Warhammer 40K Bolter after performing some dark rituals, there are tons of things to find for the player that wants to take the challenge a step further. In casual, you can take your time and do whatever you want really, while speedrun gives you a timer and a time to beat, cleaning the vacility both as efficiently and fast as possible. “Viscera Cleanup Detail” has two game modes, casual and speedrun. If you want to see how one can have fun cleaning (or rather making it worse), here is a video as a small impression: I would suggest playing it in multiplayer, since you can maximise both efficiency, and chaos, if you do not know what you are doing with a lot of other players involved. The game is quite fun, even though you are tasked with cleaning the mess of others. You will find various letters telling you to backstory of whatever happened in the facility you clean at, whether its plant monsters taking over or people just being plain incompetent and ending their own lives prematurely due to that. “Viscera Cleanup Detail” gives you levels to explore, which is one of the fun things to do in the game. Now, you might be saying that you do not like cleaning up in real life, why would you want to do it in a videogame. At the end, you even get to use a special sniffing contraption that allows you to scan the entire level for any spots you have missed. While getting rid of the corpses and cleaning up bloodstains is self-explanatory, some levels require additional work such as fixing bullet holes in wall with a welder, collecting and stacking boxes and barrels in marked areas, getting rid of rubbish lying around, and fixing certain parts of the level by replacing broken items with intact ones. In order to get a passing grade, you need to fulfill a number of tasks. The last business meeting seems to have gone a bit … awry.Ĭleanliness is the goal of the game. However, even if things look rather dire, we still have a job to do and if we have to do it, we might aswell do it right. The same is true for you, by the way: Should you die in one of the more dangerous scenarios, it takes mere seconds to replace you with a new janitor to do the job. Turns out that just because we entered the space age does not mean human morals have drastically improved, since people are still exploited left and right however, the value of a human life seemingly has dropped, since you visit some really shady places where the loss of employees is more of a calculated risk than a tragedy. The task is always to make the facility spotless again, either to cover up the misshaps, or simply to allow for normal working conditions again. The job is simple: You are a space janitor, meaning that you clean up whatever mess is left behind in the various places you visit. Well, no one did, until there was “Viscera Cleanup Detail”, a somewhat silly but highly enjoyable game about the work that has to be done after someone had a killing spree. There is a lot of killing and dying involved in playing the good guy in a video game, and frankly no one ever asks who cleans up all the mess those shining examples of humanity leave behind. And in space it can be much worse than simply cleaning a bathroom. However, have you ever asked yourself who cleans all the mess those space-faring heroes produce? There is an audio log in “Bioshock” that tell us that even in an exclusive society of the most intelligent and gifted people, someone still needs to clean the toilets. Welcome to space! Endless possibilites await! Whether you want to steer a ship in “Elite: Dangerous”, interact with alien species in “Mass Effect”, or be exploited by a small circle of elites in “Eve Online”, the setting allows for many different takes and creative gameplay.
